Why does some water become ground water/ surface water

We are going to have a beaker with cotton in the beaker and sand on the cotton. So we will see whats gonna happen !

    How are you going to know if water passed through it, u can maybe put a beaker underneath and also put some holes underneath the pot so water can past through. But It is good and I get your point.
